Prenatal Equipment Project-PREP

The Prenatal Equipment Project (PREP) commenced on Tuesday May 25th 2010 with its first patient, while the official opening ceremony took place on Saturday 29th May 2010.
PREP is a collaboration between the Well Woman Clinic, Heineken Africa Foundation and UNFPA to assist the government in its fight against maternal and fetal mortality. With the help of the Heineken Africa Foundation and Sierra Leone Breweries (a Heineken subsidiary), we were able to purchase a 'state of the art' ultrasound machine combined with a PACS (patient archiving computer system).

With this equipment we are providing needy expectant mothers with free ultrasound examinations (at least two per pregnancy). Our aim is early detection of any problems during the antenatal period. If a problem is detected we can then refer them back to their doctors and clinics for expert management.

Our mantra is - "To be fore-warned is to be fore-armed"

This pilot project will initially be open to 1000 women in the urban area of Freetown. We hope it will encourage women to embrace the ideas of  primary health care......i.e. prevention is better than cure. If the project is successful, we hope to extend the service to other parts of the country in future.
Watch this space for the results of this innovative project !
